When we still had Comcast (we have since canceled), a technician explained to me that they use an "over the air" system in Tuolumne County. This means that all of the local channels are brought into the system using large antennas overlooking the valley (on Mt. Elizabeth?) and only after that, is the signal distributed through the cable system to individual subscribers. He acknowledged that lots of different atmospheric conditions would mess with the signal. This was before the changeover to digital broadcasting, so perhaps they now use a different system. At the time, I was amazed to find out that I was paying a monthly fee to receive TV signals though what is essentially a giant pair of rabbit ears.

We move up to East Sonora in July of 2006 and have Comcast TV. We are Comcast customers and are experiencing picture freeze and breakup. We were very happy with Comcast cable when we lived in Pleasanton and when we moved up here to East Sonora, we switched from Dish Network to Comcast cable expecting to get the same service we had in Pleasanton. We are hoping that Comcast upgrades to the service they provide in Pleasanton.

Teri, I am not on Comcast but on Direct TV. I think Comcast needs to be held to what they have agreed to or put on notice the agreement will not be renewed. I do understand we are down to less than 90 days left in the year and it is almost impossible to comply in such a short amount of time, but they have had already had over 1000 days to comply since signing the agreement. Maybe it is time to put out the word Tuolumne County is open to talking to other cable providers.

All of the critical comments you have received about Comcast have merit. Long ago they promised that computer lines would be installed, and even gave the date of the 'end of 2007' when questioned. It has never happened. We have friends in the central valley who pay less than we do and get much greater services. Their promises are hollow and are typical of a monopoly.

Please, please make them live up to their promises, and do not grant them any increases in rates until they do. Then ask them to submit comparisons to not only their own company in different areas, but to other providers as well.

I too have continued to experience deteriorating service. Since the switch-over it has been especially bad. The screen has little squares and freezes entirely; sometimes the screen is pink. This happens in the middle of a Giants baseball game, Oprah or any number of unrelated shows. I don't want to have a dish but we are strongly considering it. I have called with complaints but rather that take the complaint, they want to blame it on the box. That isn't the case because we consult with neighbors before calling in.
In a nutshell Comcast sucks.

I changed from Comcast to Dish Network several years ago because of poor pictures, unreliable provision of local channels from Sacramento, and a lack of many channels because Comcast had no plans to upgrade their cables to a system capable of providing more channels. Seems to me that if they agreed to upgrade within 3 years of the last agreement or there would be no extension, that ought to be the rule. You should not accept their statement that maybe they'll upgrade in 2010, because they probably won't, judging from their past performance.
