Crime control is first. Fire control is second. Third, the snow removal fleet should be replaced with equipment that can direct the snow it removes so that it does not end up in my driveway. Finally, the county should work closely with the forest service to protect our natural resources. Our main industry, tourism, depends on this.

I think the highest need in our county is to make it simpler for companies and individuals to create new jobs. The process of approving buildings or changes in a particular area takes far too long. The board needs to put creation of jobs above concerns about effects on traffic and other non-job concerns. I think Calaveras County does a better job in this regard, and we ought to check out their process and revise ours to be more like theirs.

Please plan to attend one of our Board meetings and express this very thing! I’ve been advocating a stronger emphasis on building our local tourism economy through the arts and agriculture. The potential of Arts & Agricultural Tourism is just waiting for support here in Tuolumne County. A growing coalition of artists, business people, educators and people from the general community already understand how much our local economy could grow with conscious effort put in to strengthening these possibilities. Let the creative folks of this community loose to develop a viable arts-based economic development plan! Tuolumne County needs a strong, cohesive branding as an arts & agricultural tourism destination! While we fritter away creative energy other counties are getting on board, and planning for this very thing. How can we take the lead if we never get started? AND when will this county realize the power and potential of having a publicly supported Arts Commission? We have a Film Commissioner. Why not re-tool that job into an Film and ARTS Commissioner? Did you know that the largest export product from the U.S. to China is Arts & Entertainment?
